—  Get to know the artist

Vanya Ryan has always been interested in expressing herself through the visual. She attended Humber College in 1984-86 to pursue that end by immersing herself into Graphic, Design and Advertising. Vanya worked in the field for a number of years, then in 1993 at home with her two small children, she explored the fine art side of her personality and let it blossom.

At this point Vanya began taking Fine Art workshops in pastel, mixed media and acrylic. Feeling confident yet ready to learn more, Vanya discovered her desire to "paint from within" in 1997 when she picked up her brush and just went wild on her canvas. This was the first of many of her "happy, colourful and energetic" paintings, and since that day she has continued along that vein and has created a funky style, all her own.

Her acrylic paintings incorporate vivid colours, fun patterns, fluid brushwork and a distorted sense of reality.

Vanya has been fortunate to be able to paint full time and continue along her road of sharing "her world" with admirers and collectors.

I remember when I was 5, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was ’an artist’, and that is the way it has always been. Though I can honestly say the reasons for my desire to be an artist have changed along the way, yet the strength of that conviction is my belief that it is who I am. I believe the art and the painter need to be true to that 5 year old (in that sense of wonder and future possibilities ahead).

The artist inside can be found by painting brushstroke by brushstroke, by learning from the art of the admired and learning from wonders of the mind. I do not pretend to be something that I am not, all I can do is paint with my colours, thoughts, inspirations and watch them bounce and maybe make sense and maybe not. Through trial and error, ignorance and hope I try to connect with my viewers, but most of all I strive to connect with myself.
